Public Buildings
The late Mayor Pro-Temp, Danny Weber, plants a tree at City Hall as part of GITC’s effort to replant the trees around public buildings. The event was held at Galveston’s Arbor Day in March 2009. The Conservancy works closely with City officials to plant in and around public buildings.
One of our first projects included the planting of new live oaks at both City Hall and the headquarters of the city’s fire service. It was felt that Galveston’s firefighters and city officials had risked their lives to safeguard the city during the storm and that it was appropriate that we honor their service by replanting their trees.
As part of that effort, GITC also promoted the establishment of Galveston’s nationally recognized tree sculpture program in which whimsical figures are carved from the stumps of trees destroyed by the storm. The sculptures – some 35 in all – are now a major tourist attraction. They include a six-foot tall Dalmatian that adorns the firehouse (read more about Galveston's tree sculptures).
