New Trees for a New Dog Park!

Some GREAT news for Galvestonians and their pups! We collaborated with the City of Galveston Parks and Recreation, GISD, Moody Gardens and Stephen F. Austin (SFA Gardens) to plant trees in the new West End Dog Recreation Area on 83rd Street. SFA Gardens has research plots at Moody Gardens trialing different species’ tolerance to wind, salt, and drought. Within those plots is a diversity of shade and ornamental trees that needed to be removed to plant new trials. Moody Gardens donated the trees to us and the City. GITC funded moving 61 large trees from the plots, along with 3 large trees from our contractor’s farm. A solar powered drip irrigation system extends to all the trees. Nine groves ranging in size from 3 – 14 trees are located for max shade during the summer. The 5-acre park is  a first-class project and offers a great opportunity for residents and their dogs to enjoy the fresh air. In fact, the official Texas Arbor Day was live-streamed from different sites all over Texas, including Galveston and we joined the livestream from the new dog park with Texas A&M Forest Service and future dog park patrons. Check out the Texas Arbor Day video, we’re from 17:10 - 20:05. Huge THANK YOUs to the Mary Moody Northen Foundation for their contributions to this project!
